Course content: Inspection of power tools (PAT Test)

The course is intended for anyone who has power tools that must be inspected annually. Typically, a warehouse manager or a specialist will be responsible for the condition of the power tools. The prerequisites for this course are only a basic knowledge of electricity: voltage, current, and what electrical resistance is.

With this course, you gain an understanding of how to perform safety inspections and PAT testing to ensure that power tools comply with current standards and requirements. The course covers visual inspection and various tests that must be carried out on power tools using a PAT tester, such as earth continuity testing and insulation testing. Emphasis is also placed on the rules and the correct completion of the documentation for inspections and PAT tests.

In addition to the fact that damaged power tools can contribute to serious workplace accidents, inspection and maintenance of power tools are required by law. Finally, the company’s operations are optimized, since the tool’s functionality works as intended. Think about how often a simple extension cord has slowed down the work because of a missing connection.

The course concludes with demo videos in which an angle grinder, an extension cord, and a charger for power tools are tested with a Megger PAT450 tester.

PAT test: Regulations in different countries;

Inspection of power tools in Denmark

In Denmark there is only a requirement for visual inspection, but legally the tool must be in proper condition. It is recommended a PAT test and a functional test be carried out to avoid accidents. In addition, you should be aware that different rules apply abroad if the company operates abroad.

Germany

All electrical equipment that can be moved must be PAT tested.

England, UK

In England, PAT testing has become a requirement, and pretty much everything in the workplace has to be PAT tested, from power tools to the coffee machine.

Offshore

there is no direct requirement, but there is a requirement that the tool must be maintained in the best possible way. It has therefore become standard practice to carry out inspection and PAT testing of power tools and electrical equipment.

Norway

To meet HSE requirements (health, environment and safety) in workplaces in Norway, the mandatory measures to ensure a safe working environment are anchored in the Working Environment Act and the regulations on internal control. Therefore, it is standard practice to document equipment with a PAT test.

Sweden

It is recommended to follow the guidelines from Elsäkerhetsverket regarding specific intervals and inspection requirements.

Australia/New Zealand

PAT testing is a legal requirement for companies in the construction, mining, and demolition industries and must be carried out every three months. PAT testing is not mandatory for all workplaces, but according to the legislation there is a legal responsibility to ensure a safe working environment. If you fail to test electrical equipment, you can be held liable for damage caused by electrical faults or defective equipment.
